Building a private-label flashlight line is more accessible than most brands realize. Here is the complete process.
Step 1: Define Your Product Specification
Start with your target market and work backwards. Key decisions: - Lumen output range (EDC: 100–500LM; Tactical: 500–2000LM; Industrial: 1000LM+) - Battery system (built-in Li-ion vs. field-replaceable) - Waterproof rating (IPX4 for consumer; IP68 for professional) - Body size and weight (pocket EDC vs. full-size duty light) - Certifications required (CE, FCC, ATEX, etc.)
Step 2: Select the Right Manufacturing Partner
Key factory criteria: - Own tooling (not just assembly — reduces per-unit cost) - In-house optical and EMC lab (for fast certification) - IATF16949 or ISO9001 certified quality system - MOQ flexibility (avoid factories with 5,000pc minimums) - Reference clients in your product category
Aurora offers OEM from 100 pcs with 30-day prototype turnaround.
Step 3: Sampling and Validation
Request 3–5 pre-production samples. Test: - Actual lumen output (ANSI FL1 standard) - IP rating — submerge at specified depth for 30 minutes - Drop test — 1.5m onto concrete - Battery runtime at each mode - UI and switch operation
Step 4: Certification
CE is mandatory for EU. FCC for US. UN38.3 for any Li-ion battery air shipment. Allow 4–6 weeks and budget $800–$2,500 per certification.
Step 5: Packaging Design
Retail-ready packaging drives sell-through. Include: product image, key specs (lumens, runtime, IP rating), compliance logos, QR code to product page.
