Understanding IEC 60529 ingress protection ratings is essential for specifying the right flashlight for each application.
Rating Breakdown
The IP code has two digits: first = solid particle protection (0–6), second = liquid protection (0–9K).
- IPX4: Splash-resistant from any direction. Sufficient for everyday carry and light rain.
- IP67: Dust-tight + immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes. Good for outdoor and hunting applications.
- IPX7: Immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes (no dust rating). Common in consumer flashlights.
- IP68: Dust-tight + continuous submersion beyond 1 metre (manufacturer-specified depth). Required for maritime, diving, and industrial applications.
- IP69K: High-pressure steam jet resistant. Used in food processing and industrial wash-down environments.
